As discussed at the meeting, the Chattanooga Mayor's letter has been sent. This letter was also sent to Chattanooga Parks and Rec department to help in future local cache placements. AB4N is in the process of working with TVA. If anyone can think of any other people then here it is for you to copy and re-word.
Dear Mayor and Parks Department,
My name is Shawn Garner and I am a member of GEOSET (Geocachers Of
Southeast Tennessee), a local club of the GPS adventure game called Geocaching.
What is Geocaching? Geocaching is a relatively new phenomenon but is a growing sport across the United States. Geocaching is a sport where you are the search engine. It is an entertaining outdoor adventure game for GPS users. Participating in a cache hunt is a good way to take advantage of the wonderful scenic and recreational areas we have here in Chattanooga using the features and capability of a GPS unit. The basic idea is to have individuals and organizations like GEOSET to set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the Internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. Chattanooga has much to offer in the area, historical areas, such as Missionary Ridge, etc. Also, recreational areas of Chattanooga can benefit from this activity. When the visitor finds the geocache all that is asked to do is if they take something from the cache container, they should try to leave something for the cache.
What are the rules in Geocaching? The rules are very simple:
1. If you take something from the cache, then you should leave something in the cache
2. Write about it in the logbook in the container.
Where you place a cache is up to you. This is where you come in. As a part of the Geocaching community, I am asking, with your permission that we (GEOSET) be a part of the Outdoor Recreation Plan that is in effect for Chattanooga. Currently we have formed relationships with the following, North and South Chickamauga Creek Greenways, The Cumberland Trail Conference, Harrison Bay State Parks, Booker T. Washington State Park, East Ridge Parks & Recreation Department. We are also in planning with Reflection Riding for a spring event for our group. We would like to place more caches in and around the city for out of town visitors and vacationers that do Geocaching and give them a chance to visit some of the wonderful places that the area has to offer.
The reason for this letter is to ask your permission to place Geocaches in and around the city at key locations. There are a few Geocaches in and around Chattanooga, but with the sport growing there is need for expansion. The City of Chattanooga could benefit in many ways as Geocaching attracts more visitors to our area, as a form of tourism. To get to know more on Geocaching please refer to www.geocaching.com/faq/
As a part of GEOSET and Geocaching I would like to personally thank you for the opportunity to acquaint you with this new sport and for your time and consideration. I hope that we can be a part of the Chattanooga outdoor community for future endeavors.
