Since this topic didn't have a thread yet I thought that I would make the first post and share an experience that I had this last week while caching in the Smoky Mtns.
The Stosh has an excellent cache called Foothills Parkway Missing Link - GCGDHG.
Check out the cache listing for the details!
In his description he mentions that the hours are restricted, but as I was driving by I couldn't help but to stop and investigate. There were no signs around indicating the area was closed after dark, only a gate closing the area to vehicle traffic due to the road work on down past the cache area, and a clear foot path around it. So I decided to boldly proceed on my cache mission.
Once I headed down the road past the gated off area the first thing that I noticed was just how dark it was. The moon had already set, and the sky was perfectly clear -- one of those nights in the mountains when you can see many more stars that usual -- absolutely breathtaking and awesome! I had to turn out my flashlight and walk by starlight for a while.
The path to the cache begins where the road crosses the Little River, yet another beautiful sight in the starlight. As I headed down into the woods my euphoric experience began to darken - pun intended
Now I am not one that often gets spooked in the dark or otherwise. However while I was walking through those woods it dawned on me, "this is bear country!"
I stopped noticing as many of the beautiful sights, instead I began thinking over and over, "them darned bears better be hibernating!"
I'm glad that I didn't even hear a squirrel trampling through the woods
It was an experience that I won't soon forget, but enjoyed nonetheless.
